How to Practice Climate Activism According to Your Sign

By Zibby Trewartha-Weiner

There are so many creative ways to be a climate activist and to practice sustainability every day. We see people all over the world taking part in various missions, making massive lifestyle changes, and demanding change from their leaders. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming. Whenever I am struggling to make sense of my place inside a huge movement, it helps me to consider astrology. Often, Astrology reminds me what my strengths are and what will leave me feeling most fulfilled. Checkout this guide to be reminded of your strengths and how you shine when it comes to activism. Read it for your rising, and if that doesn't feel true for you check out your moon or sun signs as well!

Fiery, Feisty, leader of the zodiac - Aries you need to start something that leaves you filled with energy and excitement. You are motivating by guiding, leading, and paving the way. Take that energy with you as you explore your action options. Are you interested in organizing a protest or a climate action event? You have a knack for motivating others and not looking back. Harness that nature in whatever way feels best to you. Maybe organize a recycled materials art market, or plan a fundraiser for an initiative that you care about. Whatever it is, you will likely feel your best if you just get started.

Hey homebody, it's likely that your way of life is already making your carbon footprint pretty low. As a Taurus you are oriented towards the cozy, the comfortable, the grounded, and the secure. So climate change probably has you pretty freaked out and maybe overwhelmed! The best way to balance your anxiety and take action is to bring sustainability home. Maybe you are a Taurus who loves to cook - consider joining a compost cooperative near you. Maybe you are a Taurus who loves collecting new things - consider swapping amazon for a thrift store or vintage shop in your neighborhood. As an earth sign, Taurus, you feel a deep connection and commitment to this planet. Your love will make a difference and your community will feel it too.

Air sign extraordinaire, your mutable nature might leave you feeling confused or overwhelmed by all the possibilities for taking action and pursuing sustainability. You are a digester and consumer of information so you know that there are millions of things that you can do to make a small difference. But you are equally as aware that there is little that you as an individual can do to make the lasting impact that we need to resolve our climate crisis. So, I encourage you, Gemini, to channel your information into sharing and delivering what you learn with your network. You are uniquely able to not only consume information but to make sense of it too. Start a sustainability book club and share knowledge with other activists, or host a climate action teach-in for your community. You are consistently oriented towards your vibrant community so call upon that vibrancy and together you can inspire them to make a difference together.

Sweet sweet cancer - you feel the weight of the world, heavy. Your emotional connection with the planet and all its beings makes you a powerful force for climate action. When everyone else seems to dissociate or disconnect with the earth, you simply can’t separate yourself. Motivated by emotion, harness that energy and your nature as a caretaker to be a protector of the planet. You are a sign that is deeply connected to ancestry and past generations. I encourage you, cancer, to consider the ways that our ancestors cared for the planet. Consider going back to the roots by stepping into the garden, cleaning up at an area park, or standing up for the protection of ancestral, sacred land. Learn from your elders and take what you learn back to your friends and family. Sometimes going backwards is the best way that we can offer love to the planet.

Leo, you command a room whether you know it or not. Even when you feel small, you have a special type of influence. People like to hear what you have to say. When it comes to taking care of the planet, consider how you can gather a crowd and make an impression on those around you. Channel your influence and look for sustainability pursuits that give you the stage. Leo, you like to be a leader and you are especially good at it. Lead your friends, your family, your coworkers, or even your followers towards caring for  the mission of climate action. Whatever method you choose, just make sure you share it with those around you. Your opinion matters even if you don’t realize, and climate action is always best done in groups.

Virgo, you might be the most powerful of all the signs when it comes to climate action. As a mutable earth sign you are oriented towards the physical. You are acutely aware of the needs of the planet, but unlike the other earth signs, you care more about the journey than the result. Your goal is never to be the winner but to commit wholeheartedly along the way. Climate activists face a lot of burnout because the work can be slow and sometimes feels hopeless. When everyone around you is losing motivation, Virgo, for you it's all in the journey and not in the end result. Start a petition, or gather a community to review climate policy in your area. Some of the biggest climate action pursuits take time, but Virgo, you are patient. Channel your passion for process and keep your community motivated towards the collective goal.

Symbolized as the peacemaker and balance seeker, Libra, you might feel caught between all the many narratives of climate action - unsure of which path to take. What makes you powerful, Libra, is your motivation to balance the scales and seek the path towards the most justice. And if we know anything, we know that Climate activism intersects all areas of injustice. Libra, justice exists in the core of your being, you can’t escape this motivation. So express it! You are ruled by the God of love and beauty, so let the world bask in your commitment to climate justice. Have a clothing drive or swap, or maybe host a DIY art event with sustainable materials. As one of the most aesthetic signs, consider how you can gather your community around sustainability through creative expression.

Scorpio, as a fixed water sign, you are especially concerned with maintaining truth and honesty. You don’t like ingenuity and you rarely let other people get away with it. When it comes to climate action it's helpful to have someone who can hold others accountable. Because you are ruled by Mars (the ruler of all things taboo) you aren’t afraid of the darkness, the troubling, and the sometimes upsetting work of climate action. You are willing to call out injustice when you see it happen, and that can be a regular occurrence when we bring climate justice into a capitalist world. You make other people feel safer addressing the struggles of climate action and sustainability work because you aren’t afraid. Consider planning or attending a teach-in, or even inviting friends over to watch a new documentary. Continue channeling your scorpio energy by providing spaces where your community is called to act, authentically and honestly.

As a mutable fire sign, Sagittarius is motivated by curiosity. You are always the first to read the best new book, or dive deeply into wikipedia after a new movie. Your curiosity motivates your activist efforts and you are most likely aware of or invested in many different movements. Combine your curiosity with your fire sign energy, you are always ready to act when you are needed. When it comes to climate action, stay true to your outspoken nature and don’t be afraid to share with your community what you know to be true. A lot of people try to maintain a certain level of ignorance when it comes to climate change and the various issues that intersect. You are capable of exposing everyone to the problematic layers of climate change through your action oriented and curious nature.

Earth sign with an emotional edge, Capricorn you are earth bound but water ridden. Use your grounded nature and your emotional focus to connect to your planet and your people. Capricorn you feel your best when you are achieving something important that reflects your values and truths. This keeps you motivated towards your climate action and sustainability goals, but it also makes you at risk for quick burnout. Make smaller climate action goals that lead to something great. Host a community fridge drive, or gather resources for those in need during a climate crisis. And in your efforts always make sure to have patience with yourself so you can stay true to the climate action mission.

Aquarius you are known for going against the grain. As a fixed air sign, you are one of the most intellectual signs of the zodiac. Historically Aquarius’s tend to be the leaders, organizers, and creatives behind many social justice movements which may leave you with a great sense of responsibility. Because of your intellectual nature you are especially keen to the inner workings of our unjust systems and you can’t look the other way. You serve the climate action world best by turning things over on their heads. You aren’t afraid to call attention to the ways that corporations, institutions, and those in power can manipulate the rest of us. Look for the ways that you can change your behavior or consumption to honor what matters to you, and encourage your friends to join you.

The dreamer of the zodiac, Pisces, you are always wishing for better days. Your optimism is absolutely essential to climate action. There is no way to avoid the struggle and draining work of sustainability and activism, but a Pisces is always willing to seek the lens with the most optimism and beauty. You will always look for the sliver of hope whenever you can, and this helps your community maintain hopefulness too. You feel most motivated when you are sharing the energy you attract so gather up your joy, dreams, and desires, and disperse them throughout the climate action community. Pisces, you will keep your community fed throughout the grueling work and that in itself is action.
